Bananas

Bananas are not real trees, not even palm trees, even though they are often called banana palms. They are perennial herbs.

Malabar Spinach

Basella rubra, the red stemmed variety, is growing in the food forest at Beelarong.

Native Ginger

Native ginger can be grown as a great understorey plant in a food forest where it can be used as a chop-and-drop mulch.

Queensland Arrowroot

Qld Arrowroot was once a major industry in Queensland for the production of starch and flour.

Sweet Potato


Sweet potato originates in South America, and prefers tropical/subtropical conditions.

Yacon

Sometimes called a Ground Apple, it has a sweet refreshing taste that is similar to apple, watermelon, celery and pear, all in one!
